Defiance Travel Journal Day 9: Saturday Jan. 5th 2013, Shabbat and Ben Yehuda St.
Our day of rest on Shabbat gave us an excellent chance to explore the neighborhood we were in as well as get to know one another much better while resting up for the next leg of our journey. We began by doing a self-led yoga class overlooking Jerusalem and reflecting on our time together thus far. We spent the rest of the afternoon strolling through the local Jerusalem neighborhood, looking at gorgeous views of the city, and hearing an inspiring lecture by Avraham Infeld, President Emeritus of Hillel International.
Once Shabbat ended at sundown, we got right back down to business and went into the heart of Jerusalem for a chance to explore the local markets and shopping streets. Machane Jehuda Market was my favorite site around because of its busy and colorful foods, people, and goods. Every alleyway was lined with beautiful produce, spices, and food I had never heard of before. My Israeli friend Shachar who I was with give me an insider’s tour of this incredible local market, never failing to treat me to tastes of the food from every shop we passed by.
Our night continued at Ben Yehuda street which is an even bigger and more populated marketplace area. Here we treated ourselves to delicious schwarma- also at the recommendation of my other Israeli friend Yonatan. Traveling with locals is absolutely the way to go! After window shopping and poking our heads into various shops lining the streets, we met up with our fellow Birthrighters at a local club called Bass where we danced the night away Jerusalem style.
