Defiance Travel Journal Day 12: Tuesday Jan. 8th 2013, Israel Museum and Farewell
Our last day in Israel was a perfect end to our 10-day long international travel trip. We made a visit to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem which features historical and contemporary work by Israeli artists as well as Jewish artists from the around the world. The architecture of the museum definitely reflected the creative spirit of the Israeli culture- not to mention the rich artistic history laced throughout the country’s reality. We then made a stop at Gilo, a local town in the West Bank that is nearby the security fence that separates the West Bank from the rest of Jerusalem. It was extremely profound to witness the site of such political and social controversy. Throughout the entire trip, “walls” had revealed themselves in various forms as a thematic element of Israeli culture. Seeing walls in such a dividing context, instead of a supporting and strengthening context, was extremely eye-opening and humbling at the same time. We then went to a farewell dinner to wrap up our trip, and said goodbye to our fellow travelers as we got ready to make our way back to the States. Our trip was finally coming to a close and we left overwhelmed with experiences, memories, and relationships. Israel will always be in our hearts.
