Join The Defiance Project in a flashmob on UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza in conjunction with Dance Anywhere 2013! We will be engaging the Berkeley and UC Berkeley communities by facilitating a communal movement practice happening on the Mario Savio steps of Sproul Plaza. This site has a rich history of protest, activism, and social engagement- The Defiance Project’s flashmob performance piece will continue that tradition through promoting individualized movement expression in the larger context of a public community engagement happening. Stay tuned for more information!

What if there was a public celebration of dance everywhere, around the world, simultaneously? What if, in one moment, the whole world started dancing? Why wait for a performance opportunity to come your way? No audition, no application, no references, no formal dance training needed. Everyone is invited!

dance anywhere® is a simultaneous worldwide public art performance and we want YOU to be the star! For the past 8 years, people of all ages and artistic capacities have made dances in parks, museums, street corners, schools, work places, community centers, offices, and just about anywhere you can imagine. Participants have been professional dancers and artists, plumbers, doctors, soccer players, teachers and politicians. Some dances are choreographed, some are improvised, and some stretch the definition of what dance is.
We hope you will participate on Friday, March 22, 2013 at noon CA, 3pm NY:

Flashmob Score and Schedule:

11:50-12:00 defiance project dancers do an improvisational score we have been working on in rehearsal as a teaser.

12:00-12:25 we all do the official score. Defiance dancers turn into a circle and others join the circle, clapping to drums or the music. A leader in the circle breaks and begins a conga style line first, people behind them put hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them. Eventually hands release and we do walking with clapping and stomping. Skipping. Running. Run in to a cluster and do the electric slide (grapevine right, grapevine left, step on left foot and lean forward, step back on right foot and lean back, kick right leg and pivot body ninety degrees to the right to start the sequence again).
